Deep Undercover for Ana Grey
January 21, 2009

Judas Horse by April Smith is the latest entry in her Ana Grey series and it is marvelous, another thrilling ride on the coattails of brave, stubborn, and earnest FBI agent Ana Grey. Grey, recently returned to active duty after killing a man, is mentally fragile but as committed as ever to the FBI and to her career as an agent.  She sees herself as the good guy out to catch the bad guys and when the remains of her ex-fiancee and fellow FBI agent are found in the wilds of Oregon, she wants in on the investigation.

Ana goes undercover as Darcy Guzman, replacing
the dead agent in an investigation into F.A.N., a violent and anarchic animal rights group.  The deeper undercover she goes, the more she realizes she is not the only FBI agent angling to settle scores --  and it  is not long before Darcy/Ana starts following her own agenda in the battle against corruption.

Judas Horse is an edge of the seat nail-biter, providing excitement from start to finish.  The action is interspersed with Smith's signature exploration of the psychology that goes into becoming -- and staying -- an FBI agent.  Grey's past, hints of which were brought out in
the first Ana Grey mystery, the action-packed Good Morning Killer, and further  illuminated in the exciting North of Montana, once again provides a framework for her present actions in Judas Horse.  Ana finds herself in the hardest dilemma yet of how far to go in fighting the good fight -- and where the good fight lies.  I can't wait for the next installment in the story of Ana Grey.
